Eyelid health

At For Your Eyes Only Optometry Center we are dedicated to keeping your eyes healthy, and that includes your lids too! We treat various conditions ranging from blepharitis (inflamed lids) to a stubborn hordeolum (active stye) or chalazion (inactive stye). We also help manage meibomian gland dystrophy, which is often the primary contributing factor to dry eye.

Flashes and Floaters

Sudden onset of new flashes and/or floaters, always warrants a prompt visit. While sometimes flashes or floaters can simply be signs of an ocular migraine, the presence of a retinal tear or detachment must always be ruled out.

At For Your Eyes Only Optometry, you can be assured you will receive a very thorough evaluation of your retina, and receive timely treatment when necessary.

What is an eye emergency, and what to do

Please call our clinic as soon as possible or visit the nearest emergency room if you are experiencing:

  • Sudden vision loss or blurry vision in one or both eyes: This could be a sign of a serious condition like retinal detachment
  • Severe eye pain: This can indicate a range of issues like glaucoma, corneal abrasion, or chemical burns
  • Painful, red, or swollen eye: This could indicate infection or inflammation
  • Head injury with eye pain or vision changes: An underlying injury may exist even if the eye appears unharmed
  • Floaters or cobwebs in your vision: This could be a sign of retinal detachment or vitreous hemorrhage
  • Chemicals or foreign objects in your eye: Do not attempt to remove them yourself. Flush your eye gently with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately

While you wait for medical attention, there are some general steps you can take depending on the situation:

  • Do not rub your eye. This can worsen the injury
  • Remove contact lenses, if possible
  • Apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling, but do not apply pressure
  • If chemicals or a foreign object has come in contact with your eye, rinse your eye gently with clean water
  • Stay calm and still
