Shedding Light on Astigmatism
Do objects appear blurry or distorted, even at different distances? These could be signs of astigmatism, a common vision condition affecting millions.
What is Astigmatism?
Imagine a perfectly round basketball. That's how a healthy eye focuses light onto the retina, providing clear vision. Now, imagine an egg instead. This is what happens with astigmatism. The cornea, the clear dome at the front of your eye, has an irregular curvature, causing light rays to bend unevenly and focus at different points. This results in blurry or distorted vision at all distances.
Symptoms of Astigmatism
- Blurry or distorted vision at all distances
- Squinting or headaches from eye strain
- Difficulty focusing on close objects
- Eye strain and fatigue
- Halos or starbursts around lights
Treatment options for Astigmatism
We take a comprehensive approach to astigmatism treatment. We'll conduct a thorough eye exam to assess your vision and determine the severity of your astigmatism. Based on your needs, we can recommend various treatment options:
- Corrective glasses: Prescription lenses and glasses can correct most forms of astigmatism
- Contacts: Most types of astigmatism can be corrected with soft contacts. Hard contacts may be necessary for more complex cases
- Surgery: In rare cases, laser surgery may be an option to reshape the cornea and correct astigmatism
Presbyopia Solutions to Regain Near Vision
Presbyopia is the gradual inability to focus on close objects, a natural consequence of aging that affects most people over 40. While annoyingly common, presbyopia doesn't have to be a permanent inconvenience.
For Your Eyes Only Optometry Center offers comprehensive solutions to restore your near vision and empower you to see life clearly at any age.
Our experienced optometrists will conduct a thorough eye exam, utilizing advanced technology to diagnose the severity and specific characteristics of your presbyopia. Based on your individual needs and lifestyle, we'll tailor a treatment plan for you.
Hyperopia (farsightedness)
Hyperopia or farsightedness is a vision problem where you can see things far away clearer, than objects up close. It is not to be confused with presbyopia. High levels of hyperopia are often correlated with amblyopia and/or strabismus. Hyperopia can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
Myopia (nearsightedness)
Myopia or nearsightedness, is a visual condition in which you can see things clearly up close, but blurry at a distance. Research on nearsightedness has peaked over the last decade, and we have gained insight on a lot of the risk factors that can influence its progression as well as comorbidities associated with higher levels. Studies suggest high myopia increases risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration. For growing patients, our myopia management program is an excellent way to reduce future dependence on glasses, and reduce incidence of visually threatening conditions. For patients with already high levels of myopia, it is essential to be evaluated yearly to ensure early intervention when indicated. Myopia can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
Strabismus (Eye turn)
Strabismus, more commonly known as an eye turn, occurs when the eyes are not aligned when focused on a target. In some cases strabismus can cause double vision. All cases of recent onset double vision need a full comprehensive visual examination, and possible co-management with a specialist. Once a cause has been established, double vision can be mitigated with a type of correction called prism. Our doctors at For Your Eyes Only Optometry Center have extensive experience with correcting double vision by prism lens glasses.
Amblyopia (Lazy eye)
Amblyopia or a lazy eye, is a condition when vision in one, or both eyes does not develop properly in childhood. This can usually be attributed to an uncorrected high prescription, an asymmetric prescription between the eyes, or an eye turn during one's early years. Amblyopia treatment outcomes are best when addressed early, but can still have a significant impact on those who are older. Common treatments done by our doctors include eye patching or atropine penalization therapy.
